BOCA RATON, FL, July 28, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gone are the days of the ubiquitous redwood picnic table with benches and plastic-webbed chaises from the mid to latter part of the last century. Today there's an exciting world of sophisticated, beautiful and high-quality furnishings designed specially for your outdoor living pleasure.

Whether you are a full- or part-time South Florida resident, making your patio, deck, lanai or loggia comfortable and functional has its rewards: year-round enjoyment.

Unlike cold-weather climates where the window of opportunity for such enjoyment is short, in Florida there are 12 months during which that outdoor space can be the center of your home.

Michael Hayes, who buys patio furniture throughout Florida and patio accessories throughout the country for Robb & Stucky Interiors, says that decorating your outdoor "room" is similar to furnishing any other area of your home. You'll need to consider flooring, rugs, accent pieces, lighting and other essentials.

"First, determine the main uses of the space. Will it be for relaxing and reading a book? Sharing cocktails with neighbors and friends? Dining? Or a combination of these functions?" Hayes asks. "The more conversations you have about this the better, as they will help you identify what you need or don't need. For example, you shouldn't purchase a dining set if you won't be eating outdoors."

Come up with a space plan - or seek assistance from a trained design or patio professional who can create one for you. This will be a big help in terms of how you'll position your furniture. If you have a great backyard view (i.e., pool, lake, golf course), be sure that your seating arrangement is oriented toward that view. A fade- and mildew-resistant outdoor area rug would be good for defining one or more of the areas.

"There's a myriad of choices of outdoor furniture in varying styles, materials, fabrics, colors and prices, so explore the options," Hayes said. "Don't forget to sit on any outdoor sofa or chairs that you might buy to ensure they fit your body and are comfortable."

He also recommends that you repeat colors from the interior of your home in the outdoor area. "In South Florida, where homes typically have several rooms that open directly onto a lanai, carrying the same colors from the inside out will make your outdoors appear as one large space," he noted. "If you add live or artificial plants throughout, then you will truly blur the line between where the interior of your home stops and the outdoors begins."

Think about evening ambiance, too, which will require you purchasing both directional and ambient lighting made just for the outdoors. This could be weatherproof lamps or an outdoor fireplace. Candles are also ideal if you want to create an inviting, tranquil or romantic mood.

If a crackling fire isn't to your liking, you might want to add a fountain, since the sound of cascading water can be very soothing.

Other accessories are equally important in your outdoor space. Carry out the color palette with accent pieces and artwork and, if you do plan to dine outdoors, coordinate your table settings to enhance the overall dining experience.

Besides contributing to your year-round enjoyment, creating a usable outdoor space could add value to your home, especially if you make that space the retreat you've always dreamed of!
